The Adventures of Sir Oisin Rhymour Leif McGowan: 2020 to the Present

A upcoming and on-going column of the author’s “two cents” on various topics of discussion, theories, contemplation, and life’s chances. Originally it was going to be labelled “My two cents” (but hey a copper is worth more than the cent) or “My three cents” (for inflation you know), but decided to go medieval as “my two gold pieces” to run with the theme.

All semantics aside, it is the author’s version of “putting their two cents in” the subject of discussion, the tentative statement of one’s opinion(s). It adds in politeness and humility to deprecate that the opinion to follow is only worth two cents – a small amount, the lesson impact of contentious statements with a sense of irony.

Some say it was first used in the Gospels of Luke and Mark through the lesson of the widow’s mite. The tale follows several wealthy temple patrons donating large sums of money for higher stature and favor, while an extremely poor widow just places two small coins (her “two cents”) into the offering finding greater favor with Jesus than do the wealthy patrons offering more as the widow gave all her money to the temple whereas the rich made little investment, keeping most to themselves. Others think it came from the game of poker, requiring a small bet or ante to play the game. It also could have derived from “a penny for your thoughts” the sarcastic response for receiving more opinion than requested “I said a penny for your thoughts, but I got two pennies worth!”
