The Lure (NR: 2015)

The Lure: NR; 2015. Drama, Fantasy, Horror. Director: Agnieszka Smoczynska; Writer: Robert Bolesto; Starring: Marta Mazurek; Kinga Preis; Michalina Olszanska; Kinga Preis; and more. IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5278832/.

By far the most enticing thrilling enchanting movie I’ve watched this year sofar (2024), definitely atop my all time favorites. The Lure, which i stumbled upon on some streaming channel I can’t remember which one … I was instantly mesmerized by this foreign horror musical drama featuring one of my favorite fae species … Mermaids. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m overly obsessed with Faerie lore. This movie embraces fae living amongst us in the 1980’s time period. Not only that, but the 80’s/alternative music atmosphere drives me home to my era, with even more excitement. The story shows the tale of mermaid sisters named “Silver” and “Golden” who become enchanted by the song of “Figs and Dates” band members partying on the beach – they make friends and become adopted by the cabaret club the band operates within. Its a twisted love story beyond the “Little Mermaid” obsession with a human and going through a twisted operation to gain human legs permanently. The sister doesn’t understand and decides to listen to her natural desires -devouring the flesh of humans in the city. While this pitstop was meant only as a stop-over for the sisters new life in America, they become trapped in Warsaw. The music, sex, horror, the gore, comedy, drama, and the art-house madness makes it a uniquely enchanting mermaid tale. Review: 5 stars out of 5 by Oisin Rhymour

In a Violent Nature (2024: R)

1 star out of 5

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love horror movies … even the campy ones. But this one … wow, just wow … sucked worse than anything I’ve ever seen. I really don’t even want to write a review, but more of a warning “not to waste your money or time with this one.” Poor acting, poor directing, and absolutely crappy composition. The “monster” – take off on “Jason” in Friday the 13th series, was just boring and made no sense. The firefighter mask was sooo stupid. Why this insane non-verbal killer would go out of his way to dismember his victims the way he did made no absolute sense.

The premise sounded good, but did not play well at all making the storyline crap. “When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.”

The director and creator of this film lacks any imagination whatsoever to create their own ideas … they borrowed and had epic fail on almost every snippet they used from other campy horror flicks. Don’t waste your time.

I won’t even both listing the director, writer, and actor/actress names for this one. A total complete failure.

After a week of archaeological fieldwork in Findlay, Ohio … I capped off the week with a visit to Findlay’s AMC theaters – flatbread pizza and lemonade for dinner while watching my favorite type of movie …. Supernatural Horror. A washed-up reporter (Played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan who plays Negan in Walking Dead) goes to investigate an oddity and discovers a cursed doll imprisoning a demon. It gets released and possesses a hearing-impaired girl that believes she is visited by the Virgin Mary instead. Many come to partake of her miraculous healing gift but the demon causes horror. A dark battle ensues. Good movie. Perfect plot with a believable historical setting, acting, and screenplay well done. Edge of your seat timeline. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

Jolt (R: 2021)

Rated R, released in 2021. Amazon Prime Original movie. 1 hour, 31 minutes. Directed by Tanya Wexler, Written by Scott Wascha, starring Kate Beckinsale, Jai Courtney, Stanley Tucci, and many more.

It’s a pseudo-realistic tale of a woman with rage, that kills, and needs control. From childhood, her anger management that gave her super-strength in her fits of rage led to a path where she had to wear an electrode-lined vest that she’d activate to shock herself with jolts of electricity to put herself in her place. She discovers love for the first time and that seems to be her cure-all. Little did she know, that it was short-lived and false, leading her on a vengeful quest to find a killer and destroying anything in her path. Does it lead to true love? Good plot, well-done screenplay, and production. Amazon original film. Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 – reviewed by Thomas Baurley, Techno Tink Media.

As she struggles to raise her human son while sneaking out to blood feed each evening, she finds the need to fly across the Atlantic taking the red-eye flight in the darkness. Her plans are foiled as a group of terrorists seize the plane and awakening the monster within her. It’s a fight for survival, vampires protecting human son, fighting off the terrorists, and trying not to infect others. Excellent plot and storyline, well-produced, great effects, and a good tale. Nobody (R: 2021)

Starring Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, Connie Nielsen as Becca Mansell, Christopher Lloyd as David Mansell, Rza as Harry Mansell, Gage Munroe as Blake Mansell, Aleksey Serebryakov as Yulian Kuznetsov, Ilya Naishuller as the Director, Braden Aftergood as the Producer, and David Leitch / Marc Provissiero as co-Producers.

The epic tale of a dad protecting his family from a home invasion, but to the whole disappointment of his kindred, he is afterall a “Nobody” who is incapable of the task. But in reality, he’s a super dangerous agent who gets triggered leading to a rage, pulling retired instincts and lethal skills from dormancy leading to an outright war. The Russian mob gets mixed into his rage, and they go at each other leading to mass destruction, death, and injury. He quickly changes his families views of being a “Nobody” in no time.

Great plot, choreography, and the film is laid out well with edge of your seat adventure. I enjoyed the flick.

Those Who Wish Me Dead (R: 2021)

Rated R: Released 2021
Suspense, Crime, Adventure
Runtime: 1 hour, 40 minutes
Starring: Angelina Jolie (Hannah); Jon Bernthal (Ethan); Nicholas Hoult (Patrick); Finn Little (Connor); Medina Senghore (Allison); Laura Niemi (Maggie); and more.

One of my favorite actresses – Angelina Jolie (next to Charlize Theron) plays in this epic crime-drama adventure of a accountant who discovers financial crimes triggering a mob to kill him off before he releases their secrets. As he seeks safety in the wilderness with family, the plan is foiled. The mob catches up with him and chases his son through the wilderness to wrap up loose ends. Only to discover the fire fighter Hannah on the edge of suicide, discovers the boy and comes to save him. They race from the flames to safety, and to catch the criminals in their tracks.

Its a brilliant plot and storyline, well made, and choreographed. A fan of Angelina Jolie, always impressed with her abilities. I watched this one on its release on HBO-MAX and was not disappointed. It would have however been more spectacular in the movies.

Godzilla vs Kong (PG-13: 2021)

Rated PG-13: Released 2021
Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, Action
Runtime: 1 hour, 53 minutes
Starring: Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Bown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza Gozalez, Kyle Chandler, Demian Bichir, and more.

Another great Titan film as the Titans world and mythology is explored even deeper with worlds within worlds. The famed adversaries fight to the death again as Godzilla vs Kong in an epic battle for the earthly throne. They however, realize they must team up against the humans who created their own robotic Titan set out to eradicate them. The world’s fate hangs in the balance. The humans help Kong find his inner earth home, led by a young girl named Jia who has become Kong’s best friend. They find the weapon of Kong’s power, and set off to save humanity.

Full of blockbuster special effects, CGI, and photo-realistic animation … the film does not disappoint. Heart felt and edge of the seat excitement, the adventure with Kong and Godzilla rooting out human evil is epic. Good plot, retelling of Titan mythos into a modern context. Very well done. I watched this on its release date during its simultaneous release on streaming services and limited theater openings. It came with my HBO-MAX subscription.

A Quiet Place: Part 2 (PG-13: 2021)

Rated PG-13: Released 2021
Run Time: 1 hour, 37 minutes
Suspense, Action, Horror, Science Fiction
Starring: Emily Blunt (Evelyn Abbott); Noah Jupe (Marcus Abbott); Brian Tyree Henry; Millicent Simmonds (Regan Abbott); Cillian Murphy (Emmett); John Krasinski; and many more.

Part two of the infamous science-fiction horror classic tale “A Quiet Place” when the earth is invaded by an alien species that hunts by sound. In order for humanity to survive, they must be absolutely silent. The slightest noise will send these creatures to rip humans to shreds. The tale continues to tell the story of a family of 5 trying to survive together … losing a son and husband in part one, and continuing on with the mother, baby, son, and daughter in part 2. The father from part 1 had discovered putting his daughter’s hearing aid to a microphone causes the creatures excruitiating pain … giving humans a vantage of being able to kill them while the creature is distracted. A island previously unaffected by the aliens, becomes infected. Juggling human emotions and the bravity of kindness, helping those in need to survive.

Well done, but not as good as the first movie. The plot runs thick and continues in like-fashion. Luckily I got to see this one in the theater, during the pandemic as the immunized populace in the United States has allowed theaters to re-open. While there were only a few people in the theater, and we had to remain masked for the whole film, the seemingly dying tradition of movie theaters is still alive.

I Still See You (PG-13: 2018)

Rated PG-13: Released 2018
Horror, Supernatural, Apocalypse, Science Fiction
Run-time: 1 hour, 38 minutes
Directed by Scott Speer, starring Bella Thorne, Dermot Mulroney, Richard Harmon, and more.

A haunting world after a cataclysmic event … a universe where the dead still remain as echoes and apparitions throughout the homes, streets, and fields for surviving humans to encounter. The world attempts to return to normal, but these apparitions haunt them – unable to affect their lives other than memories. However, one of the ghosts break the rules and try to kill Ronnie – a student who seems to be haunted the most.

Well designed and choreographed. Very interesting plot and much to ponder after watching. A great murder mystery in a supernatural context. I watched this one after looking up apocalyptic films on Amazon Prime. Luckily caught it 3 days before it will be removed from the service.
