The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (R: 2008)

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (R:2008)
Director: Rob Cohen. Starring: Brendan Fraser … Rick O’Connell; Jet Li … Emperor Han; Maria Bello … Evelyn O’Connell; John Hannah … Jonathan Carnahan; Michelle Yeoh … Zi Juan; Luke Ford … Alex O’Connell; Isabella Leong … Lin; and many more.

The Mummy Returns to the blockbuster screen with a new twist as the adventure goes to Asia instead of Egypt. The retired couple O’Connell’s decision to go back to work as they take an offer they couldn’t turn down where they are ployed into resurrecting the Han Emperor (Jet Li) and go through a quest ranging from the catacombs of ancient China into the frigid Himalayas. Rick (Brendan Fraser) reunites with his son who joins the adventure – Father, son, wife, brother – a family affair off to stop a 2,000-year-old mummy curse that threatens the existence of life as we know it. An immortal double-crossing sorceress assists them in stopping the Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors that are the silent terra cotta army that comes alive. Great adventure and twists … even though I liked the first movies best, this one was worth its weight in terra cotta. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

The Haunting in Connecticut (PG-13: 2009)

The Haunting in Connecticut

The Haunting in Connecticut http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492044/ * PG-13: 2009 *

Director: Peter Cornwell. Starring: Virginia Madsen … Sara Campbell; Kyle Gallner … Matt Campbell; Elias Koteas … Reverend Popescu; Amanda Crew … Wendy; Martin Donovan … Peter Campbell; and many others.

An incredibly sensational film about the telling of the story about the infamous “Haunting in Connecticut” on the big screens with the horror-all of Hollywood special effects and dramatization. The film starts out with a struggling mother named Sara who is trying to deal with her son Matt’s battle with cancer. They have to get a new house in Southington in order to be close to the hospital. Matt chooses the basement so that he doesn’t disturb the family with his treatment’s side effects of late-night visits to the bathroom and screams of pain. The basement however turns into a perplexing mystery as there is a door that he can’t get open. Dreams (or hallucinations from the medication he is testing) start to show horror and disturbed spirit unrest. He starts seeing things during waking hours that no one else is seeing. His family becomes affected. He discovers that the door leads to a former morgue. The horrors of what took place in the morgue and the house begin to present violent and supernatural events upon the family as Matt becomes possessed by the spirit of Jonah who is involved with the horrors that the mad doctor conducted in the basement. Matt discovers photos of the dead, a box of human eyelids, and records that seances were conducted in the basement as well. As Matt and his friends investigate the house, they find the previous owner, Doctor Aickman was the madman behind the madness that has trapped dozens of disturbed spirits in the house. Aickman was conducting necromancy on the corpses to enhance Jonah’s abilities as a medium, and instead of burying the bodies in the cemetery like the public thought he had, he ripped their eyelids from them and stacked the corpses into the walls of the house. A fellow patient of Matt’s, a former minister named Nicholas, helps unravel the haunting mystery. It’s a crazy story based on a true incident. Very exciting tale. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

The Hills Run Red (R: 2009)
Director: Dave Parker. Starring: Sophie Monk, William Sadler, Tad Hilgenbrink, and many more. A most disturbing horror film was made ages ago and a few horror fans stumble upon its trailer and are dying to see it. However, it’s rumored that the film has been destroyed. They track down the director’s only living daughter, a stripper who has lost herself in a world of drug addiction. The horror fans take her on an adventure back to her childhood grounds to find the film – but little do they know that it’s still being filmed and they have now become the most recent stars. They find dementia, incest, and the disturbing macabre. Definitely a typical hack-n-slash flick. Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5.

* Director: Michael Bay * Starring: Shia LaBeouf … Sam Witwicky; Megan Fox … Mikaela Banes; Josh Duhamel … Major Lennox; Tyrese Gibson … USAF Master Sergeant Epps; John Turturro … Seymour Simmons; Ramon Rodriguez … Leo Spitz; and many more.

The continuing saga of those extra-terrestrial vehicle-transforming-electronic-alien race that live amongst us hidden. For those who’ve seen the previous movies and comics, its about the story of Sam who was selected as a caretaker of these aliens. But Sam is grown up now. He’s ready to head off to college and the Transformers want to go with him. He says no, and he realizes he can’t escape them. The early hidden race of decepticons are rising and awakening their brothers “The Fallen” and cause havock in Shanghai. Unfortunately, even though the autobots are in league with the U.S. military, a presidential envoy believe the existence of the autobots on our planet is what is causing the trouble and asks them to leave. But the Decepticons are not about the autobots, but rather something about Sam and a mystery of ressurrection for the Fallen. Its a crazy adventure of transformation sorts. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

This has got to be one of the worst movies ever produced. Those who know me, know I’m a zombie fan. A big zombie fan. Zombie movies usually equate to B-rate Horror. In fact, I’ve seen some really bad zombie movies. But have to say this one takes the prize. I found it in the bargain bin for $3 a few months ago – now I see why, and why I hadn’t bothered watching it until now. I doubt I’ll get 25 cents for it at the used video store. It’s about a time in the near future when death row criminals are given a chance to pardon themselves via a game show/reality tv show that tries to mimic “Survivor” with “House of the Dead”. They are dropped on an island to make it across the island to find 50 million dollars awaiting them as well as a full pardon and their freedom. Little do they know the island is filled with fast-running rage-filled zombies. It even lacks the usual blood of a zombie film. Bad plot, bad acting, bad lines. Sheer crap. Rating: 1 star out of 5.

Across the Universe (2007: PG-13)

Across the Universe
(2007: PG-13)
Director: Julie Taymor. Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, and many more.
One of the most visually stunning and musically mesmerizing movies I’ve ever seen … It’s one of the best musicals of our time! A masterpiece by director Julie Taymor as a revolutionary rock musical that re-images American during the turbulent late-1960’s era when the battle lines were drawn overseas and at home. It’s the story about a young dockworker named Jude (played by Jim Sturgess) who leaves Liverpool to find his estranged father in America during this crazy period of history. Jude falls in love with Evan Rachel Wood’s character “Lucy” for a true meaning of “Lucy in the stars like diamonds” who is a rich but sheltered American girl who is merging her life into the anti-war movement within New York City’s Greenwich Village. A stimulating visual trip through the Vietnam crisis, the draft, political tensions, and a psychedelic world has gone made blended together with a fantastical love story. It’s an amazing perspective of the time and crisis. Cameo by Bono in the film as well. One of the best films of this genre I’ve ever seen. Simply mind-blowing. Rated: 5 stars out of 5.

Spring Break Shark Attack (NR: 2005)

Spring Break Shark Attack
(NR: 2005)
Director: Paul Shapiro. Starring: Shannon Lucio; Riley Smith; and many others.

Ok, this is totally a “Jaws” meets “Spring Break” wanna-be flick, but it has some of its own entertaining points of value. Paul Shapiro brings a school of human-craving sharks into the hotspot of Spring Break activities. Of course, you have the innocent sheltered young teen (named Danielle) sneaking off to Florida for Spring Break fun with her friends. She of course falls for a good-natured local named Shane who runs the boat charter business for his mom. There of course is the jock who is unwanted and stoops to criminal degrees to get the girl he wants. Danielle’s older brother Charlie is a marine biologist investigating a new reef in the area – and the mess of them stumble into something quite sinister going on at the beach as swimmers start disappearing. Turns out a school of Tiger sharks has an appetite for the scantily-clad. It’s definitely a B-rate of its own accord, and not many Shark attack movies can compete with Jaws these days, but kudos to those that try. Rating 2.5 stars out of 5.

2012 (PG-13: 2009)

The Epic tale of the forthcoming prophecy/conspiracy theory/claustrophobia belief that based on the Mayan Calendar the world will come to an apocalyptic end on December 21, 2012. I’m a big fan of catastrophe and disaster movies, but this one was a stinker. Mainly because the authors felt they had to re-enact the biblical “flood” as the end of the world. Doesn’t Christianity prophesize that God wouldn’t destroy the world again by “flooding”? Full-blown re-telling with modern-day space-tech “arks” gathering together people, animals, art, flora, fauna, and the world’s treasures. Seriously lame, though the effects were semi-spectacular and visually stunning, but definitely far-fetched and unbelievable. The story is based on findings in 2009 by geologists who determine the Earth’s core’s temperatures were increasing too rapidly. As they inform the White House staff in Washington D.C. and President Thomas Wilson (played by Danny Glover) to figure out what to do. The governments of the world decide to keep it a secret and join efforts to build these life-saving arks with a pre-determined guest list. John Cusack’s character (always a top-notch actor) of Jackson Curtis, while on a camping trip with his kids, discovers the upcoming world end and its a race for survival as they tromp all over the planet, getting out of the brink of disaster in extremely far-fetched unbelievable circumstances. Everyone’s dying and the world is losing its ground … but somehow the family jumps a plane to plane and crash lands in the arctic peaks of China only to yet again have an unbelievable journey to illegally board the arks. That’s ok though because they save the Ark from yet another disaster. Failed plot and scheme. Only worth watching for John Cusack and the disaster fun effects. Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5.
