The adventurers awoke early to depart their stay in Clongriffin and headed off the highways and roads towards Swords in search of Holy wells. Their first stop was St. Doulagh’s well and chapel where they were greeted with very limited options to park. Lady Etain and Prince Cian stayed in the car while Sir Thomas Leaf tromped across the street, through the gate, past the high cross, past the chapel to the Holy Well – circular fortified structure with gated access to the well, with well house built over it. Pretty phenomenal well Sir Thomas thought. They then drove towards the legendary well of Feltrim Hill – which too was gated with no trespassing signs as the construction and quarrying destroyed this holy site. They then sought out Highfields Holy Well, again destroyed this time by residence community buildings. They made their way into Swords, greeted by the massive Castle, and took a stroll in the castle grounds. Then exploring the town center, they found the tourist information center inquiring about holy wells, to which blank stares were replied with no knowledge of such existing in town. They grabbed some Cadbury chocolates from the Euro Store, some chai n’ Wi-Fi at the mall’s Starbucks, then set out to find St. Werburth’s and St. Chomcille’s wells. They tried again to find a well located near the graveyard, boggy access in the field prevented walking out to a lone fairy tree that looked like it was guarding over a well below. A lot of driving around and exploring boggy areas until they pinpointed by dark fall the actual wells … They found St. Werburth’s well, next to the Kellogg’s plant, which was the most spectacular find of the day. Pitch dark no less, greeted by a Buddha and trinkets hanging from rag trees, a guest book, charms and offerings along the spring’s floor as a hidden cubby in a bush. A modern built threshold and arch leading all into the well with a finely carved greeting stone displaying St. Werburth’s well. Sir Thomas Leaf made offering and took a sip from the well, requesting blessings of their quest and restfulness for his mother. They drove back into Swords and stopped for dinner at the Pink Elephant Thai Restaurant where Sir Thomas Leaf had his favorite seafood pad Thai, as well as Prince Cian, and Lady Etain enjoying her favorite curry. They then drove over to The Lord Mayor’s The Well bar and grill searching for Chomcille’s well which it was named after. Around a residential block, they found a car pushed up towards the well squashed between modern developments. The well, in disrepair and some signs of vandalism sits tucked by a hand pump nestled under an apartment complex. No water taken from this well as it was quite questionable with safety. They then drove outside of swords for a stop of chai and Wi-Fi to cap off the evening before sleep took them over. It was a good day with great finds.
