Portmarnock, Ireland – Malahide, Ireland
The adventurers awoke early from their Clongriffin abode and piled into the car shuttling away towards the beach. The challenge was finding the location of an obscure well on the beach that sir Thomas Leaf found in his holy wells of Dublin book. The couple took out the little Prince who was all too excited to be back on the beach again, giving him a chance to play in the sand and stroll along the Oceanside. This is a favorite beach for Sir Thomas Leaf and Lady Etain, especially Etain who spent many days strolling along this coastline. The beach is infamous for one of the first transatlantic flights from Ireland to Australia, being commemorated as such a landmark of Irish history. They worked their way towards the lighthouse, down below of which the Portmarnock Spring is supposedly located. They did discover a seepage/spring that could well be the culprit holy spring, although other sources claim the “Portmarnock holy well” is within the graveyard. In scouring the landscape the delvers headed on to the next holy well on their list of attractions to visit – ST. Sylvester’s Well in Malahide. A sound beautifully constructed and fortified stone well house just off the old main street (Church Street) in downtown Malahide. This historic well had the magic emanating from its core. Unfortunately the quest seekers could not partake of the waters as they were grated off from access. Strolling around Malahide the adventurers soon found themselves worn out, headed back to Clongriffin for some rest and relaxation.

Malone Chairman Dublin County Council to commemorate Portmarnock’s contribution to world aviation history. It was from this beach on 24th June 1930 that the famous Australian aircraft Southern Cross piloted by the legendary Charles Kingsford Smith and navigated by Dubliner, Captain J.P. Saul departed on its pioneering Atlantic Flight to Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, where it landed safely some 31 1/2 hours later. Also in the crew were John Stannage and Evert Van Dyk. It was also from this beach on 18th August 1932 that James Mollison made the first solo East-West flight across the Atlandtic in the De Havilland Puss Moth aircraft “The Heart’s Content”.
