Maple Falls, Silver Lake – Sumas, Washington
Some days don’t begin with a trumpet blast. August 28, 2022, started late, soft around the edges, with campground sleep still clinging to everything and no one in a hurry. The whole morning had that lazy campground hush. By checkout, the day was already a small collage: cereal, lake water, border miles, errands, work, and one last pocket of summer. It felt half vacation and half return to ordinary life.
Sleeping in and easing out
After a few packed days, that slow start felt earned. Sleeping in after a trip always feels a little rebellious.
Breakfast before the drive
Breakfast was simple: shredded wheat, Mini Wheatix with milk, and orange juice. Nothing fancy, but it suited the sleepy mood. We packed up, checked out of the campsite by 11, and got moving without much fuss.
Silver Lake, one last swim
Before heading back, we stopped at Silver Lake. That was the bright little jewel of the morning. We swam, jumped off the docks, and held onto summer a bit longer before the drive took over.
When the trip turned practical
Once the swim was over, schedules came back.
A lunch gap on the road
Lunch was one of those road-trip half-meals. Cian had a ham and cheese sandwich, and there wasn’t enough for me, so my lunch became a problem for later. Small hitch, nothing tragic, just the usual travel-day math.
Back to shifts and client work
Home wasn’t waiting with a clean landing. We still had delivery shifts to finish, and I had a bit of client work after that. Regular life stepped back in with its clipboard and keys. That switch is never dramatic, but you feel it.
Target, groceries, and Lake Whatcom
The evening wasn’t grand, but it had its own small sparkle.
The Robot Treasure X stop
We stopped at Target, and Cian found a Robot Treasure X. I’m still not sure how a robot fits under Treasure X, but he liked it, and that settled the matter. Some mysteries can stay mysteries.
Pistachio ice cream and a longer swim
There was a grocery run too, and my clear favorite was Magnum pistachio ice cream. I tried one of their bars and wasn’t all that impressed. Earlier, we’d squeezed in about 40 minutes at Lake Whatcom, plus the swings. So even the errands still carried a lake-day afterglow.
The day folded shut
By night, everything had folded back into the familiar. We ate burritos for dinner, watched a movie or two, handled the last scraps of work, and finally went to bed. That’s the charm of a Sunday like this. Full, a little uneven, a little funny, and still satisfying. It began with sleeping in and ended with sleep again, only this time with the day properly used up. Some days don’t need fireworks to feel complete.
