In 2013, Oxford University professor Bryan Sykes concludes that the mythical Yeti (aka Abominable Snowman) is descended from the ancient polar bear according to the DNA analysis he conducted. He compared hair samples from two animal specimens claimed to be the Yeti in the Himalayans. These matched a genetic fingerprint with the polar bear jawbone found in the Norwegian Arctic. The jawbone is claimed to date over 40,000 B.P. He deduced it may be a hybrid between polar bears and brown bears. He made a call out to Yeti investigators to share hair samples thought to be from the creature.

He received approximately 70 samples, 27 of which had good DNA results. He compared these with other animal genomes from a database, and two came up with intriguing matches.

He cross-referenced samples from an alleged Yeti mummy from the Indian region of Ladakh in the Himalayas as well as a single hair 800 miles away from Bhutan, with the distance so far apart believes the species are still alive. He believes these polar bear relatives may walk on two feet often, thereby giving the appearance of an ape-like creature.

The Yeti has been embedded in myths and legends, matching with those of Bigfoot or Sasquatch – large human-like, ape-like creatures believed to live in forests, mountains, swamps, or remote areas. Science does not back the claims, but enthusiasts and cryptid hunters claim authenticity. Sykes seeks to bring some scientific data to light to the mythology and sightings claims.
