John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (Clarno Unit – Oregon)

The Clarno Unit is one of three sections of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument that was designated by the United States as an area of special concern in Wheeler and Grant counties of Eastern Oregon. It is located within the John Day River basin and operated by the National Parks Service.

John Day

One of the famous pioneers of Oregon is a man named John Day. He was a trapper who came to Oregon with a large group and fell into a smaller group heading West while traveling along the Columbia River. He was born in Culpepper County Virginia. He traveled West through Kentucky to the Spanish Upper Louisiana which is now Missouri by the year 1797.
