Xanten: Legionary Helmet

“Legionary Helmet”
Xanten, Germany
“Legionarshelm” or “Legionary Helmet”; Bronze; Xanten-Wardt.
(4th century BC – 1st century BC)
artifact at the Xanten Archaeologie Park, Xanten, Germany.
This particular helmet at Xanten looks very similar to the Montefortino Helmet used by the Romans. This helmet was named after the Roman Republican era named Montefortino. It was the first stage of helmet development of the galea. Examples can be found in Spain, Gallia, and Northern Italy. Some surviving examples usually are missing the cheek pieces. These are the first helmets to be proven of Roman origin as highlighted often by inscriptions on them. These helmets are commonly undecorated, but effective and protective, as a mass-produced armament for the poor legionaries. Dates as early as the 2nd c. BCE.
