Scientists say the problem is a side effect of the April 2010 explosion of BP&#8217;s\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1334873538_3\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-ndcor\" style=\"cursor: pointer;\">Deepwater Horizon oil<\/span>\u00a0rig, which killed 11 people and spilled at least 4.9 million barrels of oil into the ocean. At least 50 percent of shrimp caught in Barataria Bay, a popular shrimping destination heavily impacted by the spill, were found to be missing their eyes during that period. Yet the Louisiana government maintains that its fish is safe to eat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_4_0_21_1334929906351_208\" style=\"margin-top: 11px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Is there any other evidence of mutations?<br \/>\nA separate survey from the University of South Florida found that two to five percent of the fish in the Gulf were found to have skin lesions or sores following the spill. Before the\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1334873538_5\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-ndcor\" style=\"cursor: pointer;\">Deepwater Horizon<\/span>\u00a0disaster, that figure was just one-tenth of 1 percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 11px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">What does BP say?<br \/>\n&#8220;Seafood from the Gulf of Mexico is among the most tested in the world,&#8221;\u00a0<a style=\"color: #5d4370;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myfoxhouston.com\/dpps\/news\/bp-gulf-spill-effects-dpgonc-20120418-to_19256481\" rel=\"nofollow\">the energy company says in a statement<\/a>. And &#8220;according to the FDA and NOAA, it is as safe now as it was before the accident.&#8221; Still, on Wednesday, BP reached a $7.8 billion out-of-court settlement with lawyers representing thousands of individuals and businesses affected by the disaster.
