Instead, the pile ended up revealing a previously unrecognized suspect in\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1325773092_1\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-visible\" style=\"cursor: pointer; color: #366388; border-bottom-width: 2px; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #366388;\">colony collapse disorder<\/span>\u00a0a mysterious condition that for several years has been causing declines in U.S.\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1325773092_2\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-visible\" style=\"cursor: pointer; color: #366388; border-bottom-width: 2px; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #366388;\">honeybee populations<\/span>, which are needed to pollinate many important crops. This new potential culprit is a bizarre and potentially devastating parasitic fly that has been taking over the bodies of honeybees (<em>Apis mellifera<\/em>) in Northern California.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_3_0_21_1325773581880219\" style=\"margin-top: 11px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Georgia, Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 22px; background-color: #ffffff; padding: 0px;\"><span id=\"lw_1325773092_0\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-visible\" style=\"cursor: pointer; color: #366388; border-bottom-width: 2px; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #366388;\">John Hafernik<\/span>, a biology professor at\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1325773092_5\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-ndcor\" style=\"cursor: pointer;\">San Francisco State University<\/span>, had collected some belly-up bees from the ground underneath lights around the University\u2019s biology building. \u201cBut being an absent-minded professor,\u201d he noted in a prepared statement, \u201cI left them in a vial on my desk and forgot about them.\u201d He soon got a shock. \u201cThe next time I looked at the vial, there were all these fly pupae surrounding the bees,\u201d he said. A fly (<em>Apocephalus borealis<\/em>) had inserted its eggs into the bees, using their bodies as a home for its developing larvae. And the invaders had somehow led the bees from their\u00a0<span id=\"lw_1325773092_6\" class=\"yshortcuts cs4-ndcor\" style=\"cursor: pointer;\">hives<\/span>\u00a0to their deaths.
