{"id":4556,"date":"2009-02-23T01:38:30","date_gmt":"2009-02-23T01:38:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.technogypsie.com\/science\/?p=3"},"modified":"2009-02-23T01:38:30","modified_gmt":"2009-02-23T01:38:30","slug":"easter-island-stone-figure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technotink.net\/science\/easter-island-stone-figure\/","title":{"rendered":"Easter Island Stone Figure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From the <em>Smithsonian Museum of Natural History<\/em> exhibit on 2\/21\/2009<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong \/><em>placard sign:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This figure came from a rare inland ceremonial site called &#8216;Ahu O Pepe.&#8217;\u00a0 Most moai, including this one were carved from hardened volcanic ash found at a single quarry, Rano Raraku. About a 1000 moai remain on Easter Island. This figure and another acquired at the same time are the only ones in the United States. Paymaster William J Thomson acquired them in 1886 for the Smithsonian Institution. At that time, they were lying on the ground with six other toppled moai.
