Monitor and Merrimac Buttes<\/b> * Canyonlands National Park<\/i>
Very prominent landforms within Canyonlands National Park that tower over 600 feet above the Navajo sandstone base. These buttes were named after the civil war ironclad battleships of the same name that they deeply resemble. The Merrimac (left) was the Confederate ship called “the Virginia” by the southern forces. The Monitor (right) was the Union ship sent to destroy the Merrimac. These are composed of Entrada sandstone. <\/p>\n
